The Bronx Volunteer Coalition’s Volunteer of the Year Awards were covered in the Bronx Chronicle by our keynote speaker, “I Love the Bronx” columnist and super-volunteer Nilka Martell.
Held at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the event was attended by nearly 100 Bronxites.
Volunteers in four categories were acknowledged: “Young Volunteer Leader”; “Neighborhood Impact”; “Lifetime Volunteer Service”; and “Organized Volunteer Impact”. Seventeen individuals and seven groups were honored, and the online voting received over 6,700 votes.
The Bronx has come a long way. For decades, the initiatives of volunteers have largely responsible for the restoration and revitalization of the Bronx.

The BronxNet television show BronxTalk focuses on public issues in the Bronx in a talk show format. After our Martin Luther King Jr. Day Event, the Bronx Volunteer Coalition got some press during an interview with one of our member agencies, Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC. The Bronx Volunteer Coalition’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Literacy Event was the subject of an article in the Bronx Chronicle.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr, spoke to the over 5o participants at the event about the importance of volunteer work and mentoring programs. He commended the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC and presented them with a proclamation recognizing January 2014 “NYC Mentoring Month in the Bronx”.
Kevin Dunn conducted an interactive puzzle workshop in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Barhynn Johnson, Corporate and Individual Volunteers Coordinator at LiteracyINC, read “Martin’s Big Words” by Doreen Rappaport.
